The Turkish embassy in Mogadishu has joined Ankara missions across the globe to the mark the third anniversary of the failed military coup in the country.
Senior Somali officials led by the Deputy Prime Minister, Mahdi Mohamed Guled joined Turkish ambassador, Mehmet Yilmaz in the embassy in a commemoration event on Monday evening.
The diplomatic mission said the main aim of the event was to honor the heroic martyrs that stood in front of the tanks and paid the ultimate sacrifice in the night on July 15, 2016, in Istanbul and Ankara.
“Today, we commemorate our heroic martyrs and the ultimate sacrifice made by Turkish citizens against a terrorist coup attempt organized and carried out by the members of FETO terrorist organization.”
More than 250 people were killed and close to 2000 wounded during the attempted coup d’état by some members of the Turkish armed forces.
Hundreds of Somali gathered in the streets of the capital, Mogadishu waving Somali and Turkish flags in support of the democratically elected government of President Rajab Tayyip Erdogan against the coup plotters on 16th June 2016.
The government of Somalia has since shut down schools, while ordered Turkish medical staff linked to US-based Fatellah Gulen who is believed to be behind the attempted coup to leave the country.
