First Somali Canadian immigration minister runs for MP

Ahmed Hussein, a Somali Canadian lawyer who served as the country’s Minister for Immigration will be contesting for the parliamentary seat to represent York South-Weston.

The country’s 43rd Canadian General has been slated for 21st October 2019 of members of the House of Commons.

Hussein who was the first Somali to hold federal cabinet position is vying on the Liberal Party of Canada ticket.

In 2015, Hussein won the Parliamentary seat of York South-Weston by securing 20,000 votes which equivalent 46%.

In 1993, Ahmed Hussein arrived in Canada alone, a 16-year-old refugee from Somalia.

The lawyer and father of two was the first-ever member ever of Somali descent.

Canada is home to an estimated 150,000 Somali Canadians.
