An Al-shabaab leader in charge of improvised explosives, which have claimed the lives of dozens in Somalia, was killed Saturday in south of the capital.
In a statement, Somali military said the country’s elite forces have launched security operation in areas controlled by alp-shabaab fighters in the Lower Shabelle region.
During the operation, the forces engaged al-shabaab fighters, prompting fierce fighting in Bula Haji village near Janale town.
“Eleven alshabaab fighters including the group’s head of IED team were killed in the operation conducted by Danab forces. The leader killed in the operation is called Ismail Jiis,” the statement reads in part.
The statement said there were no casualties during the operation.
There was no immediate comment from Al-shabaab group on the death of its bomb expert.
Somali military has stepped up operation against al-shabaab in Lower and Middle Shabeelle regions.
Al-shabaab which controls villages and towns in these regions has been fighting military and AU troops for the past decade.
The group lost major towns including the capital to SNA following heavy fighting for the past ten years..
