United Nations (UN) has urged Somalia’s political stakeholders to iron out differences over electoral process.
In a Twitter post, United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) has welcomed president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s call to hold consultative forum in Dhusamareeb town of central Somalia
“The @UN in #Somalia welcomes President @M_Farmaajo’s leadership convening a Federal Government-Federal Member State forum in #Dhusamareeb, and urges #Somali leaders to reach agreement in a spirit of compromise on the rapid implementation of the 17 September #electoral model,” the mission said.
International community representatives on Saturday held meeting with president Farmajo over the current political stalemate.
According to a statement by Villa Somalia, during the meeting, the president expressed his Government’s commitment to uphold the electoral agreement signed on 17 September 2020 as ratified by the Federal Parliament of Somalia.
The meeting between president Farmajo and the international community representatives comes barely two days after Jubbaland and Puntland states announced their FIEIT members, a move welcomed by Somalia’s partners.
In a a statement, the international community called for a single agreed electoral process – without parallel or partial alternatives – that will be conducted peacefully with protection of political space and media freedom, guarantees the 30 per cent women’s quota, and results in a credible and inclusive outcome that serves the national interest.
