The European Union has strongly condemned the execution of six people by the Somaliland authorities in Hargeisa.
In a statement, the EU delegation in Somalia said it is deeply saddened by the news of the execution.
“The European Union is deeply saddened by the news of the execution of 6 convicted detainees in Mandera prison, Somaliland, on 26 November 2020.”
Brussels based organization further stressed that holds a principled position against the death penalty.
“The European Union holds a principled position against the death penalty and is opposed to the use of capital punishment under any circumstances. No compelling evidence exists to show that the death penalty serves as a deterrent to crime, is more effective than imprisonment. Furthermore, any errors –inevitable in any legal system – are irreversible.
The men who were executed by firing squad on Thursday were sentenced by the court for murder and subsequent appeals upheld by the courts.
