Somalia’s Federal and regional leaders have agreed to hold timely and credible elections in the country after days of consultations in Dhusamareb, the administrative capital of Galmudug state.
According to a joint communique issued on Wednesday evening, the leaders led by President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire together with the five state leaders agreed to nominate a joint technical committee that will deliver recommendations concerning elections before they reconvene in the central city of Dhusamareb in two weeks from 15th August to decide on the model of the election in the country.
The leadership of Somalia’s two-level of government also agreed to strengthen unity, enhance FGS –FMS cooperation to sustain stability, and fight against terrorism while boosting the economic development efforts to intensify the debt relief procedure.
Speaking during the meeting President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo ruled out the claims by the opposition on possible term extension in office saying he is ready to fulfill his constitutional mandate by working towards a democratic election.
“I have never tried to influence the election model or communicate with any electoral official. I fulfilled my constitutional mandate when I received the passed bill. I have never had any preferred model. All I want is to leave a legacy of democracy and Stability.” President Farmajo said.
