Somaliland poll agency postpones parliamentary elections

Somaliland electoral commission has on Thursday announced the cancellation of parliamentary and municipal elections.

The exercise which was postponed several times before was slated on December 12th this year.

The chair of the electoral commission, Abdikadir Iman Warsame said the commission has submitted a letter to the parliament and president on the postponement.

Warsame added that legal and technical challenges are making it impossible for the process to be conducted as previously planned.

The political parties in the self-declared state signed a deal last week that will allow an increase of the number of Electoral Commissioners to 9 from their current 7, and that the new Commissioners be sworn not later than 15 October 2019.

Parliament is set approve the motion to amend the clause limiting NEC composition which should be concluded before 1 September 2019.
