Somali military has foiled al-Shabaab attack on SNA base in Lower Shabelle region.
According to locals who spoke to the media, Shabaab attacked Awdhegle town on Wednesday night, prompting heavy fighting between Somali military and the fighters.
Al-Shabaab reportedly attacked the base using motor shells before their fighters try to storm the base from different directions.
Military officials who confirmed the attack said the troops were vigilant and warded off the the assailants.
The troops reportedly managed to block the fighters, forcing Shabaab fighters to retreat.
The casualties of the attack is yet unclear.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, saying it overran the base and killed several soldiers.
Shabaab control number villages in the region as it lost major towns including Qoryoolay, Afgooye, Marka, Janaane and other to SNA forces.
Following heavy military operations by Somali army, the group opted hit and run tactics.
Shabaab which once was powerful group had lost almost all its territories including the capital after their fighters were defeated by Somali army backed by AMISOM.
