The Federal Government of Somalia has announced new plans to the country’s main International Airport.
The Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Abdullahi Omaar confirmed that the expansion exercise will kick off in December to cater to the growing air transport industry in the country.
“A plan to expand the airport will begin in mid-December,” Mohammed Abdullah Umar, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, said in a press interview.
Omaar added that once the development of Aden Abdulle International is completed, it is expected to boost the economy of the country with increased aircraft parking.
“The airport was supposed to be expanded with increased security, economy and the number of aircraft.”
He added, “We agreed with the company that manages the airport to expand the airport using the available space.”
The Minister for Transport and Aviation further indicated that the current airport will not meet the existing need in the future thus the government is considering another modern International airport outskirts of the capital Mogadishu in the future.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has pledged to finance an international airport in Somalia during the first visit of President, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo to Riyadh in March 2017.
