The Deputy Chair of Somalia’s main opposition Union for Peace and Development (UPD), Abdifatah Ismael Tahir has announced his resignation on Monday.
Mr. Tahir who is also a member of the Lower House of Parliament and Chair of the Parliamentary Committee for Ports, Airports, Transport, & Energy did not specify the main reason behind his decision to quit the position at his party.
“I have today resigned from my positions as Deputy Chair for UPD/Leadership Council for FNP. I thank friends & colleagues at the Party & Coalition level for the time we have worked together and I wish them all the best in their future endeavors.” He said.
He vowed to continue challenging President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s administration to ensure check and balance as an opposition member in the Federal government.
“I wish to assure the Somali public that my position towards the current government firmly remains the same.” Hon. Tahir said, adding “I will continue challenging the current inept leadership & will strive for a peaceful and prosperous Somalia under better leadership.”
On the other hand, a member of the Lower House of Parliament, Hussein Arab Isse also submitted his resignation to Himilo Qaran party.
Arab who served as Minister of Defence and the Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia from July 2011 to November 2012 was an executive committee member of former Somali President, Sheikh Sharif Ahmed party until his resignation.
