President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has condemned the explosion, which occurred in the famous Istiklal shopping street in Istanbul town.
In a statement, President Hassan condolences to the blast victims, reaffirming Somalia’s support and solidarity with the Turkish people in their fight against terrorism.
“I strongly condemn the violent attack in Istanbul today which claimed the lives of innocent people while injuring many more,” he said in a Twitter post. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, the Türkish people and government. Türkiye is a valuable ally in Somalia’s security and development journey.”
At least six people were killed and over 80 more injured in what Turkey’s vice president said was a “terrorist attack” that was likely carried out by a woman.
According to Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, the person who left the bomb that caused the explosion on Istanbul’s Istiklal Avenue was arrested.
“Our assessment is that the order for the deadly terror attack came from Ayn al-Arab in northern Syria, where the PKK/YPG has its Syrian headquarters,” said Soylu.
He reiterated that Türkiye will continue with its resolute and rightful war on terror.
