The Somali Police force has on Monday arrested officers accused of extorting bribery money from the public in the capital Mogadishu.
Speaking during a press conference in Mogadishu, the spokesman of the police captain Sadik Ali Adan said the officers were arrested following complaints from the members of the public and some of the motorists after the forces abused their power.
Captain Adan thanked the members of the public for the close cooperating during the arrest adding that the suspects who are in custody will be arraigned in court to answer the bribery charges.
“We applaud the tipoff from the public, it was impossible without their close coordination,” the Somali police spokesman said, adding “The suspects are in custody and they will appear before the court.”
The Somali government has recently approved the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) intended to fight corruption in the country.
The plan which was endorsed by the cabinet will strengthen the integrity of institutions, build a merit-based, professional civil service while ensuring the transparency of public finance management and promote a culture of accountability.
