SNA repels al-Shabaab attack on Afgoye town

At least three people including a government soldiers were killed and several others wounded following fierce fighting between Somali military and Al-Shabaab fighters in southwest of Somali capital, Mogadishu.

According to witnesses, heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters have last night stormed a military base in Afgooye town of Lower Shabelle region.

The attack prompted heavy fighting between the military and al-Shabaab.  Somali forces reportedly repelled the attack.

Two civilians and a government soldier were in the fighting which lasted for more than an hour.

In a statement posted on its affiliate media, Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying its fighters ran over base and killed several SNA soldiers.

The group has been fighting Somali forces backed by African Union forces for more than a decade.It also mounts deadly attacks against government officials and use IEDs to attack hotels frequented by the politicians and government officials in major towns.
