The Joint Commission for the Election of the President of Somalia has today convened in the capital Mogadishu to elect its leadership ahead of the presidential elections.
According to a statement, three candidates have vied for the chairmanship of the committee. The candidates include Senator Abdiqani Guelleh Mohamed, MP Mohamed Ahmed Bereey and Senator Abdi Ismail Samatar.
Senator Abdiqani Guelleh Mohamed, received 10 votes, while MP Mohamed Ahmed Bereey received 5 votes and Senator Abdi Ismail Samatar received 2 votes. Thus Senator Abdiqani became the chairperson of the committee.
Mohamed Keerow Mohamed and Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimow were also running for the deputy chairperson of the committee.
Mohamed Keerow was elected as the deputy chairman of the committee with 9 votes and Maalimuu received 7 votes.
The 17-member commission is expected to issue a timetable for the 10th presidential election in the Somali Republic.
The election of the 10th President of the Republic of Somalia is set to take place in the coming days in the capital city of Mogadishu.
