Somali police on Sunday said they unearthed a human trafficking syndicate, and arrested people who were suspected to have involved in the offence.
According to the police, several security operations against human traffickers in Mogadishu have managed to apprehend 27 suspects including two women.
The suspects had been smuggling migrants from different parts of Somalia to Mogadishu, where they used fake documents to leave for Gulf countries and North African countries which are transit points for migrants heading to Europe.
The police said the suspects will be arraigned in court in the forthcoming days.
“The human trafficking syndicate has been operating the capital for a while, the police officers acting on a tip off, have successfully arrested the operators. Our officers are carrying out investigations into their cases and soon they will be taken to court to face charges,” the police spokesperson, Sadik Adan Dodishe said.
Late 2019, Somali police had nabbed 11 people including 8 women who were accused of child smuggling.
At the time, the police rescued 11 children, aged from 7 months to 12 years old.
