The United Nations (UN) has extended condolences to the people of Somalia over the death of former Somali prime minister.
In a Twitter, UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) said the United Nations extends its deepest condolences to his family.
“UN in #Somalia joins #Somalis in mourning the loss of Nur Hassan Hussein ‘Nur Adde,’ who contributed many years of service to his country, including as Prime Minister 2007-2009,” reads the post.
Nur Hassan Hussein, popularly known as Nur Adde, died earlier on Wednesday.
Adde was prime minister of the Horn of African Nation from November 2007 to February 2009.
He was credited with leading peace talks between the Ethiopia-backed government and Eritrea-based rebels.
The talks, held in Djibouti, led to the formation of a unity government in which the leader of the rebels, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, was elected as Somalia’s president on January 30, 2009.
Nur Adde also served in the Somali police department, where he rose to the rank of colonel during the government of Mohamed Siyad Barre.
Born in 1930 in Mogadishu, Nur had most of his education in the capital prior to joining the Somali Police Force.
