Somalia’s lower house to elect speaker

Somalia’s lower members will today elect the Speaker of the House  in Afisyoni tent near Mogadishu airport.

Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble have differed over the management of the venue’s security.

PM Roble ordered African Mission in Somalia to the security responsibility of the venue hosting the elections of Lower House Speaker which is scheduled to take place today.

In a Facebook post, the Prime Minister said that the ATMIS leadership would work closely with the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministries of Security and Defense, and the interim Speaker of Parliament.

“The list of MPs entering the Afisiyooni tent will be submitted by the interim speaker of the parliament. Then the prime minister’s office will check and submit it to ATMIS”, the Prime Minister said.

The remarks of the PM was dismissed by Somalia’s President Mohamed Farmajo, who is among the candidates seeking re-election in Somalia’s long-delayed national poll.

The president ordered ATMIS to defer to the Somali Police Force, which is responsible for securing the election venue.
