Somali forces attack al-Shabaab controlled area in Hiiraan region

Somali forces backed by clan militias have today recaptured a village following fierce fighting with al-Shabaab fighters in Hiiraan region.

According to military officials who spoke to the media, the forces seized Helaba’ad village which lies west of Beledweyne town.

The fighting started after the allied forced attacked the village from different directions.

Al-Shabaab has not yet commented on the fighting with Somali forces.

Somali forces backed by the clan militias on Sunday captured Masagawa town. The town has been under the control of al-Shabaab for the past 15 years.

In a statement, SNA said its forces killed dozens of al-Shabaab fighters during the operation to liberate Masagawa town.

Recently, the Somali government has intensified operations against Al-Shabaab fighters in central Somalia.

The government recaptured towns in Hiiraan, Middle Shabelle and Galgaduud regions following fierce fighting with al-Shabaab fighters.
