Somalia’s newly elected president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has confirmed that his government will focus on security and political stability.
In an interview, Mohamud said his government will collaborate with the country’s political stakeholders to the political instability which had impact on the development.
He said his government will ensure the security of the capital by developing robust and systematic intelligence and cooperating with anyone working with the federal government on security.
“Our institutions are still structured in the framework of the central government, he said, adding that “We will now establish a thorough agreement between the federal and state governments to federalize essential institutions.”
The new president explained that he would work towards establishing universal suffrage in Somalia at the end of his term.
He said his administration would develop an electoral system that people could agree on, unlike the elected indirect process that elected him.
Mohamud was elected last Sunday as president after defeating the outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmaajo.
The elect president was voted out of power in 2017 after serving as Somali president between 2012 and 2017.
The new president faces a daunting task in the Horn of Africa nation of 15 million people which is suffering drought, hunger and seemingly never-ending conflict.
