Debate of Somalia’s 2022 budget by Somalia’s parliamentarians has entered its second day as the country is on the edge to get new cabinet as the newly approved Prime minister, Hamza Abdi Barre assumed office Tuesday.
On Tuesday, the members of the two houses of parliament held a joint sitting to debate the 2022 budget which stands at $918.7M.
The 2022 budget is showing steady increases from previous years, with $247.7 million more than last year’s budget, which was $671 million, compared to $476 million in 2020. In 2018, Somalia’s federal budget was $267.5M.
The cabinet had approved and submitted the country’s new budget to the Somali parliament for approval.
Yesterday, the members of the parliament have asked the country’s finance minister, Minister Abdirahman Dualeh Beyle to explain government budget expenditure.
He also asked to explain the reason why he had failed to audit his ministry during the four-year tenure of former president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.
The members asked the minister asked about $ 193 million reportedly missing from the country’s coffers.
