Al-Shabaab executed five men in a public square on Sunday in the Lower Jubba’s Jilib town, accusing them of being spies.
The men who were accused of spying for US intelligence agency were shot dead by a firing squad in front of at least a hundred people, according to witnesses.
“The five men were captured weeks ago. They were publicly executed today after the court ruling and after admitting espionage,” a statement posted on an al-Shabaab affiliate media reads in part.
Jilib town is located about 98km north of Somalia’s port town of Kismayo town in the Lower Jubba region.
This brings up to 18 alleged spies executed by firing squad by AS since late July.
The al Qaeda-linked group has executed several men in the past, either by beheading or firing squad, in districts across the south and central Somalia it controls.
