Somalia and Egypt have agreed to boost cooperation in developing the fishing industry following talks between officials from both countries in Cairo.
In a statement, Egyptian Agriculture and Land Reclamation Minister El Sayed el Quseir said he had discussions with Somali Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Ahmed Adam Hassan over ways to boost bilateral cooperation in fish development and management.
During the meeting, the agriculture minister highlighted President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s directives to provide all forms of support to the African countries.
On his part, the Somali minister has expressed his government’s commitment to enhance cooperation with Egypt, saying both countries could join hands in improving the sectors.
Hassan congratulated Egypt on the outstanding organization of the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP27.
The meeting also tackled a host of issues related to the fish wealth file and how to provide support to this important sector in Somalia.
An agreement was reached to provide the necessary technical support and training to Somalia for the development of its fishing industry and the protection of its coasts and marine resources.
The agriculture minister further said that Egypt is ready to transfer its expertise to Somalia in many areas, including fishing tuna, processing, packaging, and exporting as well as net-making and boat-building and repair.
The two ministers agreed to update the memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed between Egypt and Somalia in 2015.
