Somali forces have recaptured two small towns in southwest of the country following operations against al-Shabaab.
Somali military in a statement said its US trained elite forces known DANAB carried out major operations in Lower Shabelle and Bay regions to liberate Al-Shabaab control areas of southwestern Somalia.
The military officials said the forces of the 4th Brigade of the 16th Battalion of the Somali National Army’s DANAB. took control of Leego in Lower Shabelle and Jameo areas of Bay.
During the operations, several Al-Shabaab fighters were killed and weapons recovered.
According to the statement, DANAB commandos will continue their operations until they remove Al-Shabaab from Lower Shabelle and Bay regions in the South West State.
The development comes amid the security of Mogadishu is tightened ahead of EID festival and presidential elections.
The country’s police commissioner, Abdi Hassan Mohamed Hijar said that the police force will double efforts to tighten the security of Mogadishu during Eid days.
Hijaar who was chairing a national security meeting, urged the government forces to work on improving the security and secure the city in order the presidential election take place peacefully.
