At least five schools in Garissa County near Kenya’s border with Somalia have been closed following rampant attack on school by suspected al-Shabaab fighters.
With majority of Several of the teachers who are non-locals fled the area, the schools were left with no option but to stop operations.
Recent months, there have been mass transfer of non-local teachers over alleged insecurity in the county.
Speaking to the media, board members from various institutions in the county said residents are entitled to a better education like any other in the country.
They called on the government to act tough on terror and return the teachers to resume their work in the county.
“We have decided to close the schools and ask parents to withdraw their children until the government puts its house in order,” said Hassan Sheikh Ali, who spoke on behalf of the boards.
“We want to have a united Kenya. Transferring teachers is creating divisions within this country because they are playing to the hands of the terrorists,” he added.
Al-Shabaab group has been attacking areas along Kenya-Somalia border while targeting mostly non locals working in the region.
The group vowed to continue staging attacks on Kenya’s soil until the East Africa nation withdraws from Somalia.
Kenya had sent its troops to Somalia in 2011 to fight al-Shabaab following several attack in Kenya’s coastal region allegedly conducted by the terror group.
