At least 2,000 al-Shabaab fighters have been killed and thousands wounded in the last four months, Prime minister Hamze Abdi Barre confirmed.
During a meeting with top security officials, PM Barre commended the country’s service men and women, saying the country recorded achievements in the fight against al-Shabaab.
The meeting was attended by the intelligence chief Mahad Mohamed Salad, and military and police commanders as well as advisors from the office of the prime minister.
PM Barre and the security officials also discussed ways to successfully remove the arms embargo on Somalia.
The meeting came barely hours after twin car bombings rocked the town of Mahas in the Hiraan region.
The blasts claimed the lives of over 30 people including 9 people from the same family. Dozens others were also wounded in the explosions.
Al-Shabaab claimed the responsibility for the attack, saying its fighters targeted military bases in the town.
