United Nations and the United States have condemned the deadly 30-hour long Hayat Hotel siege which claimed the lives of more than 20 people.
Heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters on Friday evening stormed the hotel which was located at a strategic location in Mogadishu.
The assailants have used Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) to gain access to the hotel, before starting indiscriminate shooting.
Among those killed in the attack are the owner of the hotel, businesspeople, elders and women.
Early Saturday, the government claimed to have ended the siege.
In a statement, the UN in Somalia said strongly condemned the Al-Shabaab attack on the Hayat Hotel in Mogadishu.
UN said it extends its condolences to the victims’ families.
The statement said the UN wished a speedy recovery for the injured and expresses its solidarity with all Somalis in their fight against terrorism.
The US also strongly condemns the Al-Shabaab attack at the Hayat Hotel in Mogadishu.
“We express our heartfelt condolences to the families who lost loved ones, wish a full recovery to those injured, and commend Somalia’s security forces,” the statement said. “The United States remains steadfast in our support of Somali and African Union-led efforts to counter terrorism and build a secure and prosperous future for the people of Somalia.”
