Somali and Ethiopian governments have agreed enhance the fight against al-Shabaab fighters following talks between Somalia’s Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur Jama and Chief of General Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces, Field Marshal Berhanu Jula.
In a statement, Ethiopian defense ministry said the two officials discussed bilateral issues of mutual concern.
Minister Nur appreciated the contribution of the Ethiopian army in ensuring the well-being of the government and people of Somalia, calling the Ethiopian side to continue its support in military capacity building to his country.
Jula highlighted sacrifices paid by Ethiopian Defense Forces through international and regional peacekeeping missions and regular deployments to eliminate Al-Shabab and ensure peace and security in Somalia.
Commending the peace dividend gained through the sacrifices, the Chief of Staff reiterated Ethiopia’s support in the fight against Al-Shabab.
The Chief of Staff highlighted the role Ethiopia is playing in partnership with partner countries for regional peace and security, stressing the need to enhance collaboration between the two countries to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region.
Jula further affirmed the commitment of the Ethiopian Defense Forces to provide capacity-building support to the army and other security forces of Somalia.
During the next few days, the delegation is expected to meet with Defense Minister Abraham Belay on bilateral issues of mutual concern.
