Somali FM in Algiers for Arab league summit

Somali finance minister, Dr Elmi M Nur has participated in the Arab League Economic and Social Council at the ministerial level meeting on Friday ahead of the 31st Arab Summit, scheduled to be held between November 1 and 2 in Algeria’s capital, Algiers.

During the meeting chaired by the Algerian Trade Minister Kamel Rezig in the presence of Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abulgheit, Somalia expressed its commitment to enhancing its financial reforms and strengthening its relations with other Arab countries.

Dr Elmi also briefed the ministers about Somalia’s humanitarian situation and the impacts of the severe drought.

“I delivered a statement discussing Somalia’s economic reform progress & the need for further support towards realising debt relief at the League of Arab States Finance Ministers meeting today. I also spoke of the economic impact of the ongoing drought & food insecurity,” the minister said in a twitter post.

At the meeting, the Council will discuss the approval of the draft agenda which aims to improve the lives of Arab nationals.

The 2019 Economic and Social Development Summit Beirut Secretary-General report on a free trade zone and customs union is chief of the recommendations.

Also agricultural development, food security and sustainability for women and gender equality as per the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

An Arab digital economy and a mechanism for addressing tax challenges arising from it, recovery efforts post-COVID and a strategy for the peaceful uses of nuclear power until 2030 are others.
