Hundreds of Kenyan security forces have been deployed to towns along Kenya’s border with Somalia.
According to Kenyan security officials, the Somali government is making headway in repulsing al-Shabaab from the cities they had earlier captured.
Kenyan officials said they expect to start experiencing an influx of al-Shaabab militants either escaping from the Somali forces’ assault or their onslaughts.
“The hostile environment in Somalia coupled with the dwindling funding gotten through Zhakat will push al towards Kenya through Mandera, Wajir and Garissa borders,” said an official.
Al-Shabaab has been carrying out attacks in areas along Kenya’s border with Somalia since 2011. The group killed dozens of non-locals in Mandera, Wajir and Garissa counties.
Al-Shabaab claimed to take revenge on the Kenya government for the deployment of its troops in Somalia.
Kenya has thousands of soldiers working under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia.
