Somalia’s international partners have expressed their solidarity with the Somali people and government over the global pandemic of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
In a statement on Sunday, the allies commended the measures by the government to contain the spread of the virus, including awareness-raising, quarantine measures, and social distancing.
‘’The partners welcome the development of Somalia’s COVID-19 Response Plan and appeal for all stakeholders to support it and align and coordinate their assistance with its priorities.”
They underscored the importance of regional unity to confront unprecedented global health challenges.
‘’The partners encourage Somalia and the countries of the region to reduce infection, reinforce health systems, and strengthen community resilience, as well as to keep key trade routes open, and facilitate vital private financial flows.”
The international community also urged the Federal Government and regional state leaders to resume collaboration to advance national priorities to mitigate the threat of the virus.
‘’All Somalia’s leaders, in the federal government, federal member states and Parliament must continue their important work, using web-based meeting options if necessary.”
They called on the armed group al-Shabaab and other groups to cease acts of violence and terrorism in order to enable assistance to reach all communities in need.
