5 killed in Al-Shabaab-SNA clashes in central Somalia

Heavy fighting between Somali military and al-Shabaab fighters flared up in central Somalia after Al-Shabaab using a car bomb attacked a military camp in the Galgaduud region.

According to military sources, at least five people including al-Shabaab fighters and soldiers were killed in the fighting in Qaayib village. Ten others reportedly sustained injuries.

The military said the government forces repelled the attack and defeated the group. Qaayib village is at a key intersection about 90kms east of Dhusamareb town.

The attack comes hours after the government announced the death of 21 al-Shabaab fighters who were killed in a security operation conducted by the Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) in the Lower Shabelle region.

According to the statement by the Somali Information ministry, the government forces also recovered weapons and medical kits during the operation.
