United Nations (UN) and African Union (AU) have welcomed Somali Labor ministry for launching National Social Protection Policy for the first time in more than three decades.
The country’s social protection policy aimed at protecting the welfare of vulnerable sections of the society in the Horn of Africa nation.
Labor Minister Sadiq Hirsi Warfa who spoke at the launching the program on Tuesday said the launch of the policy was a key milestone in ensuring state protection of citizen’s welfare.
“It’s very important for Somali people to launch the social protection policy program that will help the society to gain social protection, Health care and educational improvement for the vulnerable communities,” said Warfa.
In a statement, the African Union congratulated the ministry for launching Somalia’s Social Protection Policy saying clear demonstration of the collective commitment to leaving no Somali behind.
The AU said the program will aim at reducing inequality, invest in food security, health, education, and livelihoods, and increase resilience.
In separate, UN lauded the launching saying it is a framework designed to accelerate service delivery, bridge the inequality gap, improve livelihoods, and invest in education and affordable healthcare.
The policy was approved last month by the council of ministers.
