The Somali government has clarified that the official name of the country’s main airport in Mogadishu is Aden Abdulle International Airport (AAIA) and not Mogadishu International Airport (MIA) as largely referred to by many.
A letter from the Ministry of Transport and Aviation has urged airlines operating in the facility, embassies, and international organizations to refrain from using Mogadishu Airport.
“Mogadishu airport is named in the honor of our first president, Adden Abdulle, as the result Aden Abdulle International Airport (AAIA) is the official name of Mogadishu airport.” The letter addressed to international agencies said.
“Please refrain from using Mogadishu International Airport (MIA) in your written and verbal communications.” It added.
Mogadishu International Airport was renamed Aden Abdulle International Airport in 2007 in honor of the first President of the country following his death on June same year.
