Somali government has welcomed the decision by United Nation Security Council (UNSC) to drop Kenya’s bid to impose sanction on Al-Shabaab.
In a statement by Villa Somalia, the spokesman of Somali president, Abdinur Mohamed Ahmed said despite al-Shabaab being terror group, Kenya would have been satisfied by existing Security Council resolution 751 which boycotts al-Shabaab.
He noted that al-Shabaab is already included in a different UN sanctions programme that provides an exemption for humanitarian aid.
“There is no doubt that al-Shabaab is a terror group and there were security resolutions against it including 751 which aims to weaken al-Shabaab and its charcoal income so implementing only that is enough to irradiate al-Shabaab and their sympathizers,” said Abdinur.
Kenya’s bid to impose UN sanction on al-Shabaab was tabled months ago but was voted against it on Wednesday.
Al-Shabaab which was formed more than a decade ago has been carrying out deadly attacks in Somalia as well as the neighbouring countries.
The group now weakened by Somali military backed by troops from African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
It only controls few towns and remote villages and many of its fighters surrendered to the government.
