Somali military has recovered weapons following heavy fighting with al-Shabaab fighters outside Somali capital city, Mogadishu.
The forces carried out covert operation hunt down al-Shabaab fighters.
According to SNA who spoke to the state-owned media, the army invaded al-Shabaab bases in Gardarshe and Dhanane villages of Lower Shabelle region.
The deputy commander of SNA’s 12th April brigade, Hassan Adan Hashi told SONNA that Somali forces engaged in heavy fighting with al-Shabaab.
“We have seized weapons including AK47 rifles, PKM, RPGs, and ammunition. We also liberated the villages,” he said.
The official confirmed that the forces killed seven fighters.
“The bodies of al-Shabaab fighters are at the battlefield. We have also injured a number of fighters during the clashes. The group fled away with heavy casualties,” he noted.
The development came four days after over 30 fighters in a well-coordinated attack in an al-Shabaab base in Lower Shabelle region.
SNA raided al-Shabaab base on the outskirts of El-Salini village to hunt down the fighters who attack El-Salini village two weeks ago.
During the raid, the forces destroyed vehicles belonging to the group.
Recent weeks Somali military backed by AMISOM forces liberated several villages in Lower Shabelle region since the beginning of this year.
