The Somali government has confirmed that the suicide bomb attack that killed Mogadishu was carried out by a female.
In a statement, the Somali security ministry said the preliminary investigations indicated that a blind female suicide bomber executed the attack which took place in Mogadishu mayors office last Month.
“Somali Government says recent explosion which fatally injured late Mayor of Mogadishu was carried out by a female suicide bomber with special needs and was assisted by a second female person, both worked for the local government,” the statement reads in part.
The ministry said the female bomber walked into the premises without passing through the security check.
“The suspect entered the municipal building without going through a proper vetting process,” said the ministry.
According to the statement, Somali forces have detained persons suspected to have been involving in the plan to attack the mayor’s office.
24th of last month, a deadly bomb in Mogadishu mayor’s office killed at least 11 people and injured 12 others including Mogadishu mayor, Abdirahman Omar Osman.
The mayor and several people were airlifted to Qatar for further treatment but days later the mayor succumbed to the injuries.
Last week the mayor was laid to rest in Mogadishu.
Al-Shabaab claimed the responsibility for the attack.
