At least ten al-Shabaab fighters have been killed and several other wounded after heavy clashes with the Somali National Army (SNA) in Somalia’s central region.
Mohamud Hassan, commander of SNA 27th Division who spoke to the state-owned media on Monday said Somali military intensified operations to hunt down the group’s fighters in Hiran region.
According to the operation which took place om Monday morning successfully managed to liberate Omaad, a village in Mahas district. During the operation, forces killed three fighters.
In a separate attack on Sunday, the SNA said its forces killed seven Shabab militants and destroyed their hideouts during operations at Qulale, a village near Mahas district.
Hassan said al-Shabab suffered huge losses during Monday’s operation in which government troops cut off its supply routes.
The operation comes amid Somali military intensified the war against al-Shabaab fighters in south and central Somalia.
SNA backed by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) had liberated many villages and towns including the capital after days-long clashes with al-Shabaab fighters.
The group now controls villages in southern Somalia.
