A Somaliland military general who was accused of contacting individuals in Somalia’s capital has been released after staying behind the bars for nearly a month.
Gen. Jama Mohamud Aden (Dolal) was last month sentenced to two years in jail by a military court in Somaliland.
According to the court, Dolal was convicted to have contacted a relative in Mogadishu and discussed family issues with the person. It is not yet clear whether persons in the army were banned to have any contact with relative in southern Somalia.
The general was freed after Somaliland’s leader Muse Bihi pardoned him.
The arrest and subsequent sentence were condemned by several prominent figures, including the chairman of the Wadani party Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro).
Last month, hundreds of irate people had month went to streets in his hometown, Burao against the sentence.
