Somali National Army (SNA) officials said they killed two al-Shabaab fighters following a foiled attack in Garbaharey on Monday.
The officials’ in Gedo region said they repelled an attempted attack by the militants in their base.
The troops also recovered a cache of weapons left behind during the encounter.
Security operations were launched in the outskirts of the area to follow up the hideout of the fighters after the attack.
This latest attack comes just weeks after the reformed force announced plans to establish forward operation base in Bardere to coordinate offensive against the armed group in Gedo and surrounding regions.
Somali Prime Minister, Hassan Ali Kheyre launched the second phase of armed forces reforms during the meeting with the tasked committee.
The first phase to biometrically register and provide capacity building for the members of the army has concluded.
