The UN envoy in Somalia on Wednesday urged the leaders of Somali regional states work for the betterment of Somalia.

During a visit to Hirshabelle state, James Swan, special representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia emphasized the need for constructive relations between federal and state authorities to enhance development.

The envoys said cooperation between states as well as the federal government will foster the rebuilding process of the Horn of Africa nation.

The official held a meeting with Hirshabelle state, President Mohamed Abdi Ware and members of his government.

“We agreed that good relations between the Federal Government of Somalia and the federal member states are crucial to strengthening the state-building process in the country,” said Swan in a statement.

According to the envoy, UN will support the state several projects covering the development of institutional capacity, provision of humanitarian assistance, facilitation of political reconciliation and mediation, as well as security sector reform and infrastructure development.

“We are looking forward to increasing our cooperation with the government and people of Hirshabelle in order to implement the UNSOM mandate and the activities of the UN family more effectively,” he noted.
