Former Somali Prime Minister recommends talks with al-Shabaab

Former Somali Prime Minister, Abdi Farah Shirdon has called for talks with armed group al-Shabaab to end the violence.

Shirdon said there is no military solution to the conflict and thus direct talks with the group is the only way to put an end to bloodshed in the horn of African state.

The former premier who served under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud government, however, acknowledged that there was a prospect to defeat the group in the battlefield but that opportunity is no longer available.

He stressed the need for a political solution through dialogue since military option failed.
President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo suggested opening talks with the group during his campaign before his election on February 2017.

Several key leaders including former deputy leader, Mukhtar Robow Abu Mansour defected in recent years following amnesty policy by the federal government.

Security experts recommend Mogadishu to adopt Washington policy to “negotiate with terrorist” following talks with Afghan-based insurgents group Taliban after 18 years of fire.
