Somali Govt denies Wadajir party leader claims of social media incitement

Leader of Wadajir opposition political party, Abdirahman Abdishakur

The Federal Government of Somalia has strongly denied an accusation by the leader of Wadajir opposition political party, Abdirahman Abdishakur on Friday.

Mr. Abdishakur blamed the government for using religious fanatics in social media to threaten his life and create incitement against his party.

The move came after some clerics in the country urged him to repent following a speech on women position in Islam he made during a visit to Germany a week ago, although Wadajir party leader cleared the air and
apologized for the misunderstanding.

“Somali government dispatches its operatives and supporters on social media to spread Dahir Aways message of death.” Mr. Shakur said in a statement referring to Facebook video by former Hizb Islam leader who is on house arrest. Information Minister, Mohamed Abdi Mareye rebuffed the accusations saying the party leader should sort out his trouble with religious leaders and stop putting the government in his own shoes.

“My friend, Abdirahman Abdishakur talked about a sensitive religious-related topic which annoyed scholars and that has nothing to do with the government,” Mareye said while speaking to BBC Somali version.

“I would recommend brother Abdishakur to organize a meeting with religious leaders to sort out these sensitive issues.” The Minister added.

It is not the first time the former Hizbul Islam leader in house arrest used online social media to present his views in Somali politics.
