Somali-American Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has backed international efforts to secure debt relief for Somalia on Wednesday.

In a statement, Mrs. Omar said the debt not just only hold back the horn African state but also impacted thousands of Somali-Americans who live in the states.

“This doesn’t just have an impact on Somalis, but on the thousands of Somali- Americans who live in my district and have family in the region. “she said, adding “I am thrilled we were able to secure debt relief for Somalia today. Somalia continues to hold crushing amounts of debt—which holds back the economy and keeps millions of Somalis in poverty,” the statement read in part.

Minnesota congresswoman said she will work tirelessly in order to achieve debt-free, peaceful and democratic Somalia.

“Debt relief is a step forward in the right direction, and I look forward to continuing to work for free, peaceful, democratic Somalia we all want to see.”

She also acknowledged that the Federal government of Somalia made tremendous progress in the right direction in the past years.

“This debt relief package is a major milestone that validates the incredible progress the Somali government has made in the past several years.

The IMF board will conduct a meeting next week to discuss crucial cancellation process for Somalia’s close to five billion dollars.
