Kuwait calls for respect of Somalia’s sovereignty

The government of Kuwait has reiterated its call for respect of Somalia’s sovereignty ahead of 2020/2021 elections.

Kuwait UN permanent delegation member, Advisor Nawaf Al-Ahmad speaking at in a meeting of the Security Council on Somalia underscored that the political independence and unity of Somalia needed to be safeguarded.

Al-Ahmad urged the international community to stand with the Somali government in the country’s rebuilding process saying the Horn of Africa nation needs care and a chance to heal from the two-decade of civil war.

He called on the international community to continue providing political and material support to the Somali federal government to enable it to rebuild and stabilize the state.

He welcomed the adoption of Security Council resolution 2498, which extends arms embargo against Somalia for a year.

Al-Ahned said that this extension reflected the importance of continuing to support Somalia at this important stage in its history.

He hoped that the coming period would see progress in monitoring the implementation of the sanctions measures.

Al-Ahmad also praised efforts exerted by the Somali federal government to create conditions for holding general elections by 2020-2021.

He called on all Somali parties to overcome obstacles that undermine the achievement of political, economic and security integration.
